White Uncovered

"Our aim is to raise awareness of racism by shedding light on the privilege of being 'white' with all of its attendant inequities, oppression and sufferings, and to promote another way of being in the world which is more self-reflexive, sensitive and informed" - Lindsay Diehl, introduction to White Uncovered.

Launched at the Univeristy of British Columbia (Okanagan campus) in March 2011, White Uncovered aims to expose and examine "white" privilege in the Okanagan valley through a collection of poetry, short fiction, photography, and academic and historical articles.

While there's a great deal of discussion about race and racism, much of that discussion focuses on the disadvantages of being non-white rather than the advantages of being white. Our magazine aims to expose white privilege as a created system rather than something that's normal or natural, and to remind people that this privilege exists in our home communities. This project is grounded in the editors' own home community, but if you're reading this outside the Okanagan, we challenge you to look at the way whiteness is represented in your community.
